Ceramic Coating in Orleans
Built around the one thing that actually wears an Orleans car out: the winter commute
Orleans drivers put more highway kilometres on a vehicle than almost anyone else in the city. Two runs a day down the 174 in February means the paint spends the winter in a fine mist of brine thrown off the car in front, and brine does not behave like the dry road salt people picture: it is already in solution, so it creeps, sits in seams, and dries into a film that ordinary washing does not fully lift.
That is what a ceramic coating is genuinely good at. It will not stop a stone chip, and any shop telling you otherwise is selling you the wrong product. What it does is make the surface slick enough that brine, grit and road film leave with the water instead of bonding to the clear coat, which turns a winter rinse into five minutes rather than half an hour, and means the salt is gone before it has time to work.
What a ceramic coating is, in plain terms
A coating is a liquid silica polymer that cross-links onto the clear coat and cures into a thin, hard, very slippery layer. It is measured in microns and it is chemistry, not armour. Two things follow from that, and they are the two things worth understanding before you spend money.
First, the number a coating is marketed with ("9H") is a pencil-hardness scale for coatings on a flat test panel. It tells you the film resists marring from something dragged across it. It tells you nothing at all about impact, so it does not compete with paint protection film, which is a physically thick urethane layer whose whole job is to absorb a stone at highway speed. If you commute the 174 and care about the front end, the honest answer is film on the nose and a coating over everything.
Second, a coating bonds to whatever is on the paint when it is applied. Put it over embedded iron particles, tar, or a summer of tree sap, and it seals them in for its whole service life. That is why the preparation is most of the job and most of the invoice.
The preparation is the job
Every coating we install follows the same sequence, and none of it is optional:
- Wash and chemical decontamination. A dedicated iron remover pulls the embedded brake-dust particles that make light-coloured paint look faintly orange under the sun, and a tar solvent takes what the iron remover leaves.
- Mechanical decontamination. Clay to lift what chemistry cannot: the roughness you can feel with a fingertip on a horizontal panel after a winter.
- Correction, where it is warranted. A coating amplifies whatever is underneath it, including swirl marks. Machine polishing removes them first; see below for when to say no to this.
- Panel wipe. A solvent pass that strips every trace of polishing oil, because oil left behind is the single most common reason a coating fails to bond.
- Application and cure. Panel by panel, levelled by hand, then left to cure indoors.
Any shop that quotes a coating without decontamination is quoting a different job with the same name.
When to skip the paint correction
On the 1-year package, correction is charged on top of the coating (the 3- and 5-year packages include a single-stage pass), and it is not always worth it. Two situations where we will tell you to skip it: a nearly new vehicle whose paint has no meaningful defects yet, and a well-used daily driver where the goal is protection and easier washing rather than a show finish. Correction removes a few microns of clear coat every time it is done, and a vehicle only has so many of those.
Where it does earn its place is on dark paint two or three years into life in Ottawa, especially if it has been through automatic brush washes. Black and dark grey show every swirl, a coating makes the reflection sharper, and a sharper reflection shows the swirls more clearly than before. If you want the coating to look like the photographs, correction is not optional on dark paint.
Winter booking is different, and worth planning
A coating needs to cure warm and dry: the first day is critical and full cure takes about a week. In an Ottawa January that means the vehicle has to be inside for the initial cure and cannot be driven straight into slush from the bay door. It also means the wash and decontamination stage takes noticeably longer, because there is a season of road film to remove rather than a month of dust.
Practically: the best time to have a coating installed is late spring through early autumn, and the most useful time to have one already on the car is January. Book in the autumn if you can. If you are booking mid-winter, plan for the vehicle to be with us longer than the summer turnaround, and expect us to ask you not to wash it for the first week.
Wheels and glass, which matter more on a commute
Two coatings that people skip and then wish they had not.
Wheels. Brake dust bonds to a hot wheel face and, unprotected, needs an acidic cleaner to remove, which over years dulls the finish. A coated wheel gives it up with soap. On a car doing the 174 twice a day with a lot of braking on the ramps, this is the coating that saves the most work.
Glass. A coated windshield sheets water off above roughly 60 km/h without the wipers, which on a dark, wet November evening on the 174 is a visibility difference rather than a convenience. It also makes ice release more easily. Glass coatings wear faster than paint coatings (the wiper blades are abrasive), so treat it as a yearly item.
Keeping it working
A coating is not a reason to wash the car less; it is what makes washing it quick. Hand wash with a pH-neutral soap and two buckets. A touchless automatic wash is fine when the weather makes hand washing unreasonable. Never an automatic brush wash: the brushes mar the coating exactly as they mar bare paint, and that is the fastest way to waste the money.
Do not apply wax over a coating; it sits on top, fills nothing, and hides the hydrophobic behaviour you paid for. Get bird droppings and sap off within a day or two rather than letting them bake, because both are acidic enough to etch through a coating given a hot afternoon. Every vehicle leaves with the care sheet, and following it is a condition of the coating warranty.
