What paint protection film actually stops
Ottawa gives paint several different problems, and film answers them in different ways. Here is what it does, in plain terms.
Rock chips
Stone impact energy climbs sharply with speed, which is why highway commuters collect chips fastest. The film absorbs the strike instead of the clear coat. Repairing a chip properly runs $200 to $800 each.
Winter salt and brine
De-icing brine sits on the lower front end for months and works into any chip already there. Film gives it nothing to get behind.
Swirls and light scratches
The self-healing topcoat closes fine swirling from washing and light abrasion when heat is applied: warm water or a sunny afternoon is usually enough.
UV fade
The film carries the UV inhibitors, so your paint is not the layer taking the sun.
Nothing you can see
Edges are trimmed by hand and tucked behind the panel, so there is no film line on the panel face and the factory colour is unchanged.
Resale
A front end with no chips is worth more at trade-in than one that needs paint. Removed professionally, film comes off cleanly from healthy factory paint.

Hand-tucked edges, no pre-cut shortcuts
Every seam is trimmed by hand and tucked behind the panel edge, then post-heated to set the adhesive. It is the slowest part of the job and the first thing to fail when it is skipped.
3M film, named
The film we install is 3M: named rather than described as "premium". It carries manufacturer warranties of up to 10 years against yellowing, cracking, peeling and staining.
Computer-cut patterns, adjusted on the car
Patterns are plotted for your exact year, make and model, then adjusted on the vehicle rather than forced to fit it.
An honest answer at the quote stage
If your paint has been repaired or is lifting, film will telegraph it or fail early. We will say so before taking the booking rather than after.
Up to 10 years on the film, 5 on our work
The manufacturer warrants the film; we warrant the installation for five years. Both are written down, and the terms travel with your service agreement.

New vehicles
Just bought it? This is the easiest time to film it.
Film sits best over paint that is still in factory condition: nothing to seal in, no repaired panel to telegraph through it. If the vehicle is new or nearly new, covering the front end now costs less than repainting a hood later. It is not the right call for every vehicle, and if yours is one of those we will tell you.

EV paint is not different in kind, but the panels are: large single-piece bumpers, flush door handles, camera housings and aero cladding all change where a film pattern has to break, and where an edge can be hidden.
