Ceramic Coating in Ottawa

What a coating does, and what it cannot

A ceramic coating is a liquid silica polymer that cross-links onto your clear coat and cures into a thin, hard, very slippery layer. In Ottawa that layer has one job above all the others: giving up road brine with the rinse water instead of letting it dry onto the paint. It also keeps paint glossy for years rather than the few weeks a wax lasts, and it blocks the UV that fades paint.

What it does not do is stop a stone chip. A coating is a few microns thick; the 9H it is marketed with is a pencil-hardness figure from a flat test panel and says nothing about impact. If the front of your car collects stones on the 417, that is a job for paint protection film.

The other honest limitation: a coating amplifies whatever is underneath it. It will make a sharp reflection sharper and a swirled one more obviously swirled. That is why the preparation below is most of the job.

What every coating includes

• Chemical decontamination: a dedicated iron remover for embedded brake dust, then a tar solvent for what it leaves behind.
• Mechanical decontamination: clay, for the roughness chemistry cannot lift.
• Solvent panel wipe: removes every trace of polishing oil. Oil left behind is the most common reason a coating fails to bond.
• Hand-levelled application, panel by panel, then an indoor cure. The first 24 hours matter; full cure takes about a week.

Packages and prices

Three packages, named for how long the coating is warranted: one year, three years and five years, the last built up as a multi-layer coating. The table shows sedan pricing and whether paint correction is part of the price; the package cards further down the page restate each one and book it.

Sedan pricing; SUVs and trucks add $100 - $200. The 3-year and 5-year packages include single-stage paint correction, which is the single biggest variable in what a coating costs; on the 1-year package it is quoted separately. Vans and fleet vehicles have two to three times a sedan's paintable area, so they are quoted per vehicle; cube vans and box trucks are quoted on site. Paint correction, explained

Paint correction is machine polishing: a compound and a pad take off a few microns of clear coat, and the swirl marks go with them. The 3-year and 5-year packages include a single-stage pass; the 1-year package does not, and correction is quoted separately at $300 - $600 when the paint needs it. On a nearly new vehicle there is often nothing to correct, and every correction removes clear coat the vehicle does not get back, so we will tell you when to skip it. On dark paint two or three years into Ottawa life it is what makes the finished result look like the photographs.

Correction is also the biggest variable in any Ottawa quote: two shops pricing the same package can land far apart because one counted the hours of polishing and the other did not. A single-stage pass removes swirls, light oxidation and water spotting. It does not remove a deep scratch, and it does not rescue a clear coat that is already failing; a coating over peeling clear coat peels with it. If we find either on the walkaround, we say so before anything is booked.

Beyond the paint

Wheels and calipers. Brake dust is hot iron and bonds to a hot wheel face within a few drives, which is why a wheel left a month needs an acidic cleaner. A coated wheel gives the dust up to a pressure rinse, and the coating takes a caliper's heat.

Glass. A coated windshield sheets water off at highway speed without the wipers, releases ice more easily and keeps the winter salt haze from building up in your line of sight. Glass coatings wear faster than paint coatings because wiper blades are abrasive, so expect to renew it sooner than the paint. How the work goes

1. Wash and chemical decontamination. A full hand wash, then an iron remover on every panel and a tar solvent for what it leaves. After a winter this stage alone takes hours.
2. Clay. A clay bar or mitt over every panel for the bonded grit chemistry cannot lift; the paint should feel like glass through a plastic bag before any pad touches it.
3. Correction, where the package includes it. A single-stage machine polish on the 3-year and 5-year packages, or on the 1-year package if you have added it.
4. Solvent wipe, then application. Every panel is wiped, because polishing oil left behind is the most common reason a coating fails to bond. The coating goes on by hand, panel by panel, and is levelled before it flashes.
5. Cure and pickup. The car stays in the bay for the first 24 hours and does not see weather in that time; full hardness takes about a week. You leave with written care instructions. Plan on two to three days, longer with correction. On the 3-year and 5-year packages we arrange your ride home and back; on the 1-year package we still arrange it and you pay what the ride costs.

Why coatings earn their keep in an Ottawa winter

What makes a coating worth the money in Ottawa specifically is winter brine. Road brine is applied in solution, so it creeps into seams, clings to vertical panels and dries into a film that ordinary washing does not fully lift. Then comes the sand, thrown up by the car in front as grit that scours the lower doors. Anyone who commutes the Queensway or the 174 from November to April drives through a mist of both all winter.

A coated panel behaves differently. The brine has nothing to key into, so it gives up with the water, which is the difference between a five-minute winter rinse and half an hour with a bucket. The sand slides rather than bites. The salt is gone before it has had time to work on the clear coat: a coating does not make salt harmless; it makes salt easy to remove. Coating, film or wax

Living with a coated car

A coating asks for a routine, not for effort. Wash every two weeks in summer and every week in the salt months, with a pH-neutral soap and two buckets; a touchless automatic wash is fine when the weather makes hand washing unreasonable. Bird droppings and tree sap come off within a day or two, before they etch. Beyond that:

• Never a brush wash. The brushes mar a coating exactly as they mar bare paint, and the care sheet that leaves with the car makes it a condition of the warranty.
• No wax on top. It hides the water beading you paid for.
• Come back once a year for an inspection and a decontamination wash before the next winter.
• Renew when the water stops beading and the panels stop rinsing clean: a spring appointment on the 1-year package, a year-five decision on the 5-year package.
